Starting a small business? Don’t forget these crucial elements!

So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and start your own business. It’s an exciting time and there’s lots to think about, including your business name, logo, website and your company’s mission statement. It’s easy to get wrapped up in all these important details, so much so that other crucial aspects of your business could be neglected.

To help you remain focused and build a strong foundation for your business, don’t forget these important aspects.

Marketing

Your products are stunning and your service is second to none. However, if you neglect to create a marketing strategy, no one will ever know they exist. With thousands of new businesses being set up every year, there’s stiff competition to gain the attention and the trust of any potential consumers. A strong marketing campaign that consists of a good website, video content and regular blog posts, email marketing, infographics, social media marketing, contests, business cards and even competitions will help get your business noticed and off the ground! Sending cold emails to your clients is less intrusive than cold calling and can be a valuable asset in your overall marketing strategy.

Arrange your cash flow

Having a great business idea is one thing, but if you neglect to find a good, cash flow source, then your business idea will remain just that – an idea. The first few months will be incredibly expensive, from products and manufacturing expenses to business premises costs and marketing… the list goes on! Securing your cash flow could mean cashing in your investment isas, using your personal savings, asking friends and family for investments or taking out a loan. However you secure your business funding, make sure it’s in place before you begin trading.

Networking

As a new business, it feels natural to want to keep your cards close to your chest and not reveal too much about your new venture to competitors and other businesses. However, this attitude prevents you from networking and building strong relationships with others in your industry. So, in these early stages, remember to sign up to trade shows, dive into LinkedIn and start making connections whilst keeping the lines of communication open with like-minded business owners.

Your budget

As mentioned above, your cash flow is incredibly important and shouldn’t be neglected. However, you should also remember to focus on your budget and the cost of your overheads. From the costs of your products and manufacturing to employee salaries, the expense of your business premises and all the bills that come with it, business insurance, marketing costs and even things like your WiFi connection or tech! Ignoring your overheads and not coming up with a thorough budget can leave you in a precarious financial position. For example, if you are starting a construction company it is important that you make a habit of estimating construction costs. Don’t forget about it!

And finally, your target customer

Despite everything you’ve put in place to build a strong foundation for your business, don’t forget the most crucial element. Your target customer. Before you put any money into your business, you should already be aware of who your target market is and who you’re going to aim your services or products at. Don’t fall into the trap of believing your products and services are for everyone – if you try to appeal to every demographic, you won’t succeed!
