Organizing a Fab Cocktail Party 101

cocktail party

If there’s something that all of us love, that’s a good cocktail party. Going to one requires a couple of hours preparing and thinking about what you’re going to wear, but organizing one – well, that’s a completely different matter. Perhaps you organized one in the past and you think you can do better, or perhaps it’s your turn now to make a cocktail party for your friends because it’s your birthday party. Be as it may, here you have a couple of tips how to make your cocktail party a fabulous, elegant and luxurious night.

1. Think about the theme and décor

What is the first thing people will notice when they enter the door? The decoration, of course. This means that before arranging anything else, you need to think about the theme of your party and come up with appropriate decoration. As far as themes go, the choices are endless, but make sure to find one that will make people feel fabulous and elegant. Some of the themes could be the Oscars, the 30’s or 40’s, Hollywood – whatever comes to your mind that you know people will like. Now that you’ve established this (have you already?), it’s time to think about the décor. Now this is something that requires a lot of thinking, looking, searching, but one thing’s for sure – you need to have plenty of flowers, as they make everything prettier.

2. Book the venue

Before passing out the invitations (that you will of course make according to the theme of your party), make sure that you know the exact number of the people attending. If it’s a big cocktail party and you can’t host it in your own apartment, then finding a small venue or a café might do the trick. On another note, you won’t have to clean your apartment after so many people. Many people make the mistake of searching for the venue a week before the cocktail party – if you want a good one that will look super glamorous; you need to book it well in advance. If it’s a summer cocktail party, or you know that the weather is going to be excellent, you can always opt for outdoor spaces or pool parties.

3. Food and drinks

The fact that you’re organizing a cocktail party means that you have to pay special attention to the bar and the buffet. First of all, you will probably be swamped in your work and finding the perfect decorations, so you can always try to find ways to save some time. Ordering high-quality gin online will definitely save you the time of going to the store and browsing through the shelves. You can do this with all the drinks, and save a lot of time that you can spend on organizing other things for your party. As far as the buffet goes, find a great caterer that will make excellent finger food, which is great for cocktail parties.

4. Make a cocktail list

There’s something that you simply need to have at every cocktail party, and that’s a cocktail list for everyone to see. If you want to spend extra money, you can print out and make small menus and put them on each table, or you can opt for a cheaper yet still very posh option of writing them down in front of the bar in capital letters so that everyone can see. It would be great to have at least 5-7 different types of cocktails, because that will make your party even more interesting. Of course, you will have regular alcoholic drinks for everyone who’s not in the mood for a cocktail (do these people exist, though?)

5. The music

And finally, we’ve come to the music. This might be the last thing on your list, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not important. You can go with two options here – either book a band to play the music you want (which is a bit more expensive) or find a good DJ that will play the exact same music from the computer. You can always start your cocktail party with something more chill and sophisticated such as Celine Dion, Whitney Houston or Elton John and save the hits of the moment for a bit later when everyone’s a bit tipsy.

As you can see, organizing a cocktail party doesn’t have to be difficult. Of course, it might be nerve-wrecking, but then again, you need to wreck a couple of nerves if you want to organize something worth remembering. Good luck!
