Nausea during pregnancy

Pregnant women feel nausea and vomiting. The symptoms of both are worse in the morning times so this condition is also called “Morning Sickness” in the pregnant women. It is not necessary that every pregnant woman should feel same symptoms. The symptoms can be different for women with different intensities.

In medical “Morning Sickness” is referred to as “nausea and vomiting of pregnancy”. In the first trimester of pregnancy ¾ women experience nausea and vomiting. A pregnant woman often starts getting nausea within 6 weeks of pregnancy. In some women, nausea can start showing its symptoms in 4th week of pregnancy. Symptoms of nausea can be more severe and devastating in the next months of pregnancy.

In pregnancy, nausea usually lasts for 14 weeks. After 14 weeks, women feel better. Some pregnant women can experience nausea for more than 14 weeks. It may be 16 weeks or more. Nausea can come back at any stage of pregnancy. Few pregnant women can experience nausea till the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Morning Sickness or nausea can’t be considered as just an ailment which gets recovered. It can last for months and continue for a whole day, which can make a pregnant woman feel like exhausted. So, these symptoms should be monitored to avoid them.

The exact reasons behind nausea can’t be listed, but physiological events that occur in pregnancy, can derive the nausea to occur. These physiological events can be some hormones, which are produced in pregnancy. E.g. human chorionic gonadotropin. The level of this hormone is high is the early period of pregnancy. It can be the cause of nausea because nausea has also started within the first 4-6 weeks of pregnancy. Similarly, another hormone which is produced in the first months of pregnancy is estrogen which can be one of the possible reasons.

Nausea can be due to the increased sensitivity to some odors and smells. Some pregnant women don’t bear the smell of even of a sandwich, which is far away from them. After some research based studies, it has shown that nausea is due to sensitivity to stomach in pregnancy. In pregnancy stomach is more sensitive to the changing. It has also been shown that a bacterium which is present in the stomach is Helicobacter pylori, which effects he wall of stomach and hence, cause nausea.

Nausea in mild and moderate cases can’t be very devastating if pregnant women can manage their diet plan. But if, pregnant women are not taking balanced diet owing to nausea, they must take essential nutrients from prenatal vitamin supplements.

If nausea and vomiting are severe and persist for a longer time period, then there are more risks for premature birth and low weight at the time of birth etc.

In order to avoid nausea different steps and precautions should be taken by pregnant women:

Women should get rest

Use the large volume of fluids such as water. Pregnant women should take one or two sips rather than drinking the whole class at one time.

Pregnant women should use carbohydrate rich food. The food should have low fat contents.

Eat small portions of food/meal and prefer a cold meal in order to avoid the smell of hot meals.

Women should avoid cold and sharp taste fluids.

Pregnant women should wear loose and comfortable clothes.

In case of severe nausea, pregnant women should contact to their doctors who can recommend medications. These medicines can be anti sickness medicines such as antiemetic. The side effects of this medicine are that it results in muscle twitching. Sometimes doctors also prescribe antihistamine. Ginger supplements can also be recommended because they inhibit nausea.
