Met Ball Fashions

Each year an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City is attended by the cream of the A list crop, wearing fantastic designer outfit creations. With straight from the runway looks to one of a kind pieces created especially for the star and the event. The Met Ball Gala has a different theme each year, this year it’s: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.

Every year you see different interpretations of the theme, some work well and others not so much, you can see some of the worst on this infographic which was created by My Voucher Codes. They have looked back at the last couple of decades and picked out the most outrageous designs. What do you think are these more frock horrors than haut couture?

Our Frock Horrors

We thought that Kim Kardashian was certainly a frock horror in her maternity gown by Givenchy, obviously it’s not always easy to dress a baby bump in couture but most people found this a fail. Plus the hundreds of memes and cruel references to household furniture signalled that it was too.

Also Katie Holmes that colour the poufy style just so, so wrong, in your Marchesa yellow gown. This is not a good look, the theme was Charles James: Beyond Fashion, but Katie’s dress was beyond style. The dress did not fit that well and the colour didn’t really go with her skin tone.

We know the Met Ball Gala is an opportunity to take some fashion risks, more so than any other red carpet or event, but sometimes the risks are just not worth it. Take Sandra Lee for example, her gown for 2014 same year as Katie’s frock horror was more like a retro bridal gown, something you dream up when your five. The shiny material looked cheap and all the tulle just looked wrong, this was most certainly a fashion failure.

Our 2016 Faves

This year we didn’t seem to find too many frock horrors, although some styles we won’t be rocking on a night out, some though, we certainly will be. For the summer one thing from the Met Ball we will see people rocking is metallic, not just clothes but shoes, bags and accessories and also beauty features.

This year Gigi and her boyfriend Zayn rocked it hints of metallic more subtle on Gigi than Zayn (with his metal plate arm). What got us were the little touches of metallic on Gigi, her hair and her nails on point along with subtle metallic makeup.

So Lady Gaga was more on the crazy side, as usual, but we loved her metallic cropped jacket, this has ready to wear all over it, whether over a LBD, thrown on with jeans or even an edgy festival look this is something we will be keeping our eyes peeled for.

Stepping away from a full metallic look was model Karlie Kloss who was wearing a Brandon Maxwell white gown which had risqué cut outs. The dress was clean and bright and a nice distraction from all the metallic numbers. And well Karlie looked stunning as always with a simple sleeked back hairstyle and gorgeous red lip.
