I had the privilege to interview the jewelry brand Joes & Alfreds. They specialise in Moissanite jewelry. Moissanite is a very rare and exceptional mineral that has almost all the qualities of diamond. It was first discovered in 1893 by a scientist who investigated meteorite rock from an Arizona crater. It was classified as a new spectacular gem. The brilliance of moissanite with a refractive index of 2.65 to 2.45 of diamonds is even stronger than that of diamond! The hardness is higher than that of sapphire and ruby. According to the Mohs scale, diamond is the hardest with 10. The moissanite follows with 9.25.
Even this stone is resistant to fire and acids and very shockproof. Due to all these factors, the moissanite will retain its sparkling sparkle year after year. Moissanite is produced in white but also in different colors. Brightness and color are usually measured according to the diamond scale.Put as a gem in a piece of jewelry, even a “connoisseur” will not see if you are wearing a diamond or a moissanite. What inspired you to start your brand/business?
It all started with Moissanites. They were so shiny and beautiful. I bought 8 loose stones. Only to find out they were strictly patented. Then after a few years came the patent drop. Diamonds and all other Gemstones are not as exciting but we shortly started to craft jewelery out of everything from Moissanites, Diamonds to Amethysts and Pearls.
What is the brand’s philosophy?
The Brand philosophy is to be recognized as a trusted Moissanite, both loose and jewelery crafted suppliers. As in the midst of the world of Moissanites. A seemingly similar stone can have such a huge gap in value due to all the measurements and grading factors you have to take into consideration. So our philosophy is to provide our customers with Lab Certified Proofs of Authenticity both from our own labs and chemists but also from 3rd party labs like GRA. The values can be so confusing for someone that is not in the Moissanite business.
What has been your greatest achievement so far?
Our greatest achievement I believe is that we found out about Moissanites long before everyone else. While nobody knew the potential of the only mineral more shiny than an actual Diamond, we were able to get a head start when the patent dropped and brand our own Moissanites
