Hair Mistakes You’re Probably Making

We all dream of having long, luscious, perfect locks – the type you see on a L’Oreal advert. However, for most of us, we assume that it is simply not achievable. No matter how hard we try, our hair doesn’t have the gorgeous sheen that those lucky models seem to have. Well, the reason for this could be that you are committing a hair sin. Are you getting your hair wrong? Let’s find out…

You are a ponytail addict – Is the classic ponytail your go-to look? If so, this could be extremely damaging to your hair. This is especially the case if you wear your ponytail in the same spot all of the time and you make it too tight. You need your hair to relax; yet a ponytail pulls the strands too tight, which can lead to permanent damage. But, don’t worry, you don’t need to ditch the ponytail altogether. Simply look for something that is easier on your hair, such as ribbon elastics.

Not eating a hair healthy diet – We all know that beauty starts from within, and so it should not come as a surprise that some foods are really good for your hair’s health. If you have dull hair, start adding sweet potato to your diet. To strengthen your hair, vegetables like kale and spinach work a treat. Plus, salmon and other foods that are packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids are great for overall hair health.

You don’t specify what you want – We have all been there. You go to the hairdressers, excited about your new cut. However, once the hairdresser starts chopping and you see the pile of hair accumulating on the floor, you start to panic. How much is she chopping off? No matter whether you are going in for a trim or you are looking to go for a total different hairstyle, you need to be clear about what you want.

Using products with drying agents – Do you find that your hair is always dry? This could be because of the products you are using. It is a good idea to switch to parabens or alcohol free shampoos and conditioners. Also, make sure you do not use any styling products that contain alcohol either.

Over washing your hair – This is a topic that is very much debated in the world of hair care. Nevertheless, if you wash your hair excessively, you are going to be stripping it of the essential oils it needs. This can actually cause greasy hair, as your hair starts to overcompensate by creating even more oil. If you have hair that has a curly or coarse texture, washing it too much can cause breakage and frizz. So, how often should you wash your hair? If you have curly or thick hair, washing it once a week is fine. If you have fine hair, you should wash it every other day.

Using a towel on your hair – This may come as a surprise, but using a towel can cause breakage and split ends. This is because of the friction it creates. Not only this, but if you use a leave-in conditioner, a towel can rub this off.

Using too much heat – This probably doesn’t come as a surprise to most people reading this, yet so many people are still guilty of using too much heat on their hair. Occasional use is fine. However, it is important to give your hair a break from heat from time-to-time by wearing it natural. After all, your hair is the most stunning the way it grows out of your head naturally, so embrace this and your tresses will certainly thank you for it.

Holding on to length that isn’t healthy – A lot of women simply can’t let go of their long hair. However, if this means holding onto hair that is fried, damaged, and breaking, then it is never a good idea. Plus, pixie hairstyles are at the height of fashion right now, and short, healthy hair always looks much better than long, damaged hair.

So there you have it: some of the common mistakes people make when it comes to their hair. From being a ponytail addict to not specifying what you want when you go to the hairdresser, if you can avoid the blunders that have been touched upon above, you can give yourself the best chance of having hair that looks and feels amazing.
